The theme editor

The theme editor is where you change everything about your theme without touching code. Open it from Online Store → Themes → Customize.

Part What it is for
The top bar The page selector in the middle (which template you are editing), the device preview switch, undo, and Save on the right
The left sidebar The sections and blocks of the page you are on, plus the Theme settings and App embeds panels
The preview Your store, live, with the change applied as you make it. Click anything in it to jump to its settings

You do not edit each product page separately. A template is the layout shared by every page of one kind — every product, every collection — so a change to the product template changes all of your product pages at once.

Use the page selector in the top bar to move between templates: Home page, Products, Collections, Pages, Blogs, Cart, Search and so on. If you need a different layout for a few products, create a second template there and assign it to those products in the admin.

  • A section is a full-width band of the page: a hero, a featured collection, a testimonials row.
  • A block is a piece inside a section: a heading, a button, one slide, one testimonial.

Both can be added (Add section, Add block), reordered by dragging, hidden with the eye icon and removed. Hiding keeps the content for later; removing deletes it.

The header and footer are section groups: they belong to every page, so you edit them once, from any template.

The Theme settings panel in the left sidebar holds the store-wide choices: colours, fonts, spacing, buttons, cards, the cart. A change here applies to every page. Section settings, by contrast, apply only to that one section.

Colour schemes live here too. Sections pick a scheme by name, so editing a scheme recolours every section that uses it.

Apps that add something to every page — a chat widget, reviews, a cookie banner — appear under App embeds, with an on/off switch each. If an app “is installed but does not show”, this is the first place to look.

  • Preview on mobile with the device switch in the top bar. Most of your visitors will see the mobile layout.
  • Save often. Changes are not live until saved — and on a draft theme, not live until the theme is published.
  • Undo with Ctrl/⌘ + Z works for most changes before you leave the page.
  • Work on a copy for big changes: see Duplicate, back up and preview.
